Shimano Ultegra R8000 Review Summary - Min's Bike Story

We’ll be sure to review the other versions of the groupset as we get more test bikes in, but for the time being, this review should be a useful reference for those interested in seeing how the shared components (e.g. derailleurs, crankset) stack up.
With this in mind, and as many of you may be looking to upgrade individual parts, this review deals with each of the new components in isolation, with my verdict on the groupset as a whole at the end of this review.
Shimano Ultegra has, for a long time, been the bread-and-butter groupset of most riders, and the new Shimano Ultegra R8000 series not only reaffirms that but injects it more than ever with the performance of Shimano Dura-Ace.
We’ve ridden the Shimano Ultegra R8070 (that’s disc brakes and Di2) as well as Shimano R8000 (the purely mechanical version), and found both systems to be simply superb. There’s no doubt it our mind that this groupset deserves a spot on Cycling Weekly’s Editor’s Choice for 2017.
3 Bicycling
Shimano Ultegra R8000 is the company’s second-tier drop-bar drivetrain. Under the Ultegra umbrella, there are two shifting methods (mechanical and electronic) and two braking systems (cable actuated and hydraulic disc)–as well as bits for triathlon and time-trial bikes. The recently updated Ultegra group is a lower-cost clone of Shimano’s top-of-the-line Dura-Ace R9100. It’s for the rider who wants the performance and features of Shimano’s best road group for less dough. Ultegra is primarily a road-oriented drivetrain, though it can be found on high-performance, drop-bar bikes, including cyclocross and some gravel models. Expect to pay around $2,500 to $6,000 for an Ultegra-equipped bike.

Shimano's new Ultegra R8000 groupset is now widely available, both on bikes and as parts. If you're considering an Ultegra upgrade, should you get the new groupset, or pick up the old Ultegra 6800 at a bargain price?
5 Bike exchange
Ever since the launch of the new Shimano Dura-Ace last year, we've been waiting with great anticipation to see if and when Ultegra would follow suit. The great news for many is that a new Ultegra groupset, along with new pedals and two new lightweight wheelsets will soon be available with many of the same features as the top-tier groupset.
The new Ultegra R8000 features both rim brake and hydraulic versions; a different aesthetic; improved levers with better ergonomics and shift customisation; greater electronic shifting capacity; and wider gear ranges.

"First ride out with new groupset was a joy. Noticeably stiffer and crisp gear change and the braking is hugely more efficient. An overall improvement on my 6700. A bit tricky to set up and the derailleur tuning needs a 2mm hex tool. So good I have ordered another set for my Enigma."

Pros : looks amazing, crisp shifting
Cons : not as good as value as 105 in my opinion
Great group set in itself. Put it on my brand new BMC which came with some 105 specs. I was torn between making it full 105 or full Ultegra, but figured that if I was changing out the crank set and cassette, that I'd might as well change everything and upgrade. Overall I am very pleased with the group set, but wouldn't be worth upgrading from FULL Ultegra 6800 or even FULL 105 5800 in my opinion. Shifting is the only real noticeable difference for me and aesthetics.
Also, the group set comes in generic boxes( I assume to keep costs down) which is totally fine with me if it helps put money in my pocket. So don't be alarmed if you don't get fancy boxes.

Replaced 105 with this and I am chuffed to bits. Nothing at all wrong with how the 105 had performed but it needed replacing after 3 years hard work.
Hope to get the same from this but first impressions are great.
Very easy to fit and set up

Refurbished my Bainchi from 10 speed Dura Ace to 11 speed Ultegra groupset. The movement of levers is so precise clean changing. So easy to fit. Would recommend this groupset looks so nice now fitted. I had the 52/36 chainset with 172.5 cranks. Cassette 11-25.

Packaging arrived on time. The Bottom Bracket was a press-in and I needed and English Tread. That was probably my fault. Got it all installed and went for a ride. Left Shifter stopped working on the first ride. Local Bike Shop pulled it apart and found some wire the breadth of a human hair that is responsible for returning the FD to the big chainring. It was broken. Now ordering a new Left Shifter. We will see if Shimano honors the warranty or if I learned at $190 lesson.
Should have just replaced the cables on the 5 year old SRAM setup.

"I got this cassette to replace my worn out Ultegra 6800 one. There isn't really any noticeable difference between the two and that's probably a good thing. It shifts just as well as the old version and installation is pretty much the same as well. If you run Shimano 11-speed shifting this is a great compromise between the super-expensive Dura Ace cassette and the cheaper 105. I run the latter on my "hack bikes" but ten to get the Ultegra for my favorite road bike."
2 Johnno19 - 5 out of 5 stars
"Chose the Ultegra 11 speed cassette after experiencing horrific creaking noise that was narrowed down to the Dura Ace cassette. This is a much cheaper alternative and does the same job. There is a negligible weight penalty not noticeable when riding. Shifting is the same and no creaking !"

Ordered the 11-34 because it will work with Shimano 11 speed road shifters but can use a normal 10 speed wheelset. ONLY THE 11-34 will work like this. Besides all the well known qualities of Ultegra items, the compatibility feature is awesome since 11spd mountain and road standards are different now. You can run beefier MTB wheels for a gravel or cross build but maintain road drivetrain compatibility using this cassette.

Fits perfectly on my Trek Emonda. The only other modification needed was a new chain for the 11-33. I'm living in Quito where it's quite hilly so this cassette has been super useful ^^

2017 Kestrel Talon Ultegra came with mixed components but all Ultegras were 6800. First upgrade should have been these brakes. The Tektros (heck no's!) Are an abomination to the cycling. They have minimal modulation before the tires lock up. HUGELY BADLY PERFORMANCE! So there has been a lot of hype that the R8000 dual pivot brake calipers are superior even to the last generation of Ultegra brakes. Well buddy, these bad boys DO NOT disappoint. I can affirm that these may be the best rim style brakes out there. Period! These brakes distribute even braking force from both sides. Even with a 2mm-3mm gap max, I find that there is plenty of lever action to find the threshold before locking up the brakes. The power to stopping curve is sweet. You don't feel like your coming on too hot with the brakes or get squishy. Just evenevenly applied braking. Get the peace of mind you deserve, get these brakes.

Upgrading a 2008 Fuji with mixed components to all Ultegra r 8000 groupset. Replaced stock tektro brakes with these. Installation was simple and easy adjustment. Brakes have smooth operation and great stopping power going downhill at 40mph.
The best Chainreactioncycles Reveiw I ever read on Shimano Ultegra R8000 pedals
1 Michael
I was riding an older set of 105 pedals, these pedals are much lighter. The platform is nice and wide, the cleats are durable, and the price was great.
2 Jennifer Chase
I hope this loosens up with time, it's REALLY tight clipping in and out right now though! I love how light it is, it's nearly as light as Shimano's most expensive pedal but much cheaper. It feels like a really good-quality pedal
3 Craigsail
Usual Ultegra quality. That is, about the same as DA but a trifle heavier. The only surprise was that I hadn't realized how worn the old set was until I put on the new and every thing was nice and tight smooth..
4 Richard P
I was very happy with my purchase from Jenson and with the low price and quick delivery and total accuracy. It was my first purchase from them but I won't hesitate to buy from them again
5 Serge M
These pedals are light, great feeling and great looking, and JensonUSA had the best price I could find for these online ($90) anywhere.
You will find some reports online about these pedals being extremely hard to unclip from, even with the tension dialed all the way down. For what it's worth, I had no such issues with the pair I got - both were set to the lowest possible tension, and require a consistent and small amount of force to unclip from
